Muzium Negara – the National Museum of Malaysia

Today was our last day in Malaysia for this leg of the trip (we will be back here again in April). We decided to spend it visiting the national museum as we had missed this earlier in the week during the popup because the kids had felt tired.

After a yummy vegetarian lunch in Brickfields, the ‘little India’ of KL, we found our way to the museum which is quite challenging to find by foot from KL Sentral station because it involves many foot bridges and level changes and has no signage. Luckily I found a blog online where someone had written out step by step directions otherwise I’m not sure we would have found it!

The museum presents the history of Malaysia from the prehistoric to modern period, we concentrated on the galleries relating to the geologic and early history of the Malay region and also the early kingdoms of Malaysia. The boys were surprised to learn that the continents had all once been connected together as a super continent, they also enjoyed learning about early human species and their migration. We compared the skulls of Homo erectus with those of Homo sapiens and had fun spotting the differences. The boys also enjoyed a giant diorama showing early humans living in a cave.

The next gallery showed artifacts and crafts from the Malay kingdoms. The boys loved the ornately decorated weapons the best, whilst i enjoyed seeing some of the beautiful ikat fabrics. Simmi just loved running up and down the ramps!
