Dambulla’s sacred caves

Just outside the ancient palace of Sigirya is the city of Dambulla which contains another UNESCO world heritage site. In the rocky cliffs above the city are a series of caves which are a sacred site for Buddhists. The caves are decorated by colourful paintings and statues of the Buddha which were created by the ancient Kandyan Kings in the first century BCE.

We visited the caves as part of our day trip to Sigirya. Whilst the boys were less enthusiastic about visiting more temples after their long hot climb of Sigirya, they were soon won over by the beauty of the caves, it was definitely a worthwhile stop!
